Leed gold award winner 2008
‘Mihila’ green factory, Hirdaramani Group.
‘Mihila’, leed gold award winning green apparel factory designed by Tilak Samarawickrema for the Hirdaramani Group, is located in Agalawatta, 70 kilometers southeast of Colombo. It sits on a sloping hillside amidst lush green paddy fields, with a rainforest descending dramatically towards its southern boundary.
‘Mihila’, which gives the meaning of ‘Planet Earth’, is an apparel facility, which provides an excellent case study for environmentally sustainable development, especially due to its location. This custom built, state of the art apparel factory, which employs one thousand workers and specializes in knitwear, emits 48 % less Carbon Dioxide when compared to similar facilities of its size. It saves water by an equal percentage. Furthermore, it captures sunlight from the prismatic skylights and its architecturally textured solar paneled front façade, for lighting and heating thus partially fulfilling its power requirements, thus reducing the strain on the national grid. Another important factor is that the actual factory premises has no air conditioning.
IUCN – World Conservation Union is partnering with the Hirdaramani Group to document the bio-diversity already present in the premises of the Mihila Factory, and in addition aims to make recommendations to further enhance its fauna, flora and habitats. Finally, IUCN is involved in developing a monitoring mechanism to determine the overall environmental impact of this project. |
